Andrew Cortez listens as a judge sentences him for voluntary manslaughter

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — An 18-year-old man who stabbed to death a co-worker at the victim’s South Bay
home in April was sentenced to 6 years in prison for manslaughter Friday. Joe Andrew Cortez was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of 44-year-old Rene Pressa.
Cortez killed Pressa, a 44-year-old restaurant employee, early on April 23, according to Chula Vista police. Cortez intended to spend the night at Pressa’s residence in a mixed-use office building at 45 Third
Ave., but he stabbed Pressa multiple times when the older man made sexual advances towards him. This is a developing story.
